Disappearing Four Patch Star

Ever since completing other projects with the cut up piecework, I was looking for another variation. When Jennie Doan recently gave a summer workshop using her original Disappearing Four Patch pattern from Block Magazine and added star points, it piqued my interest. The oversized blocks eliminated the need for sashing strips. I decided to use a teal tonal print for the star. The possibilities for other block color combinations seemed endless. The participants in the workshop all had beautiful blocks to share. It was hard to decide which I liked best. I free motioned a floral design between the units and assorted straight line quilting in the borders on my domestic sewing machine. The quilt soon made it's way to a new home.

One In The Pocket

My son loves to play a game of pool. When he was house hunting, the only requirement that he had was that the house needed a place for a pool table...preferably not in the dining room. The quilt I made for him has the numbered balls and cue sticks as the focus print. Jenny Doan's Missouri Quilt tutorial called Alter Ego -- a versatile combination of the hour glass and the scrappy four patch, turned out to be a good match. I used 5 inch squares for the four patch block and 10 inch squares for the hour glass block. For the border, I stitched a 3 inch patchwork. The backing fabric is a fleece in a similar focus fabric. After dividing the top into quadrants, I straight line quilted in each area. It was a fun project and came together a lot faster than I imagined....just in time for a break in a lively game of pool.

Flower Patch Pansy

Who doesn't have a stack of leftover charm squares and strips from other projects? When I stumbled upon a television interview of Eleanor Burns with a group of women quilting in a log cabin, the pattern she used, Fabric Frenzy, caught my imagination. It was the first time I attempted a piecing technique she demonstrated. Having watched many of Jenny's videos, I feel they supported the completion of this project. I used my domestic machine to free motion stippling, flower and leaf designs. My sister-in-law now has the finished quilt gracing her living room couch where I found her black lab resting his head one afternoon :-)
