Going 'round in circles

A double-size duvet cover, made in shades of purple batiks for my daughter. The circle is quilted to the top of the duvet cover. Was a fun project using a 24" 15 degree template by Erin Underwood. Unfortunately, this isn't a very good photo!

Jack and Jill

I bought a jelly roll from MSQC called Bezantine by Bernatex. I just loved it, but had to wait for the fabric to designate its desired pattern. I found it and combined it with a royal blue batik as the complementary colour. When I showed my friends all the quilt tops that I had recently made, she loved this one. It will be for my girlfriend's 60th birthday. It took me awhile to get it quilted, but when I gave it to her, she was so touched.

Periwinkle (Wacky Web) Butterfly Blossoms Quilt

My family, as most families, has lost loved ones to cancer. My Mom, Ola, in August 2015. My nephew, Jordan, December 2014, at the much-too-young age of 30. My mom taught me to be "crafty". We did lots of crafts together. But we never quilted together. I only discovered MSQC and Pinterest and all those wonderful ideas and tutorials after she passed. She would have loved them both! But anyway! - I was looking for a new "therapy" craft that she and I had never done together. I found quilting! I have some quilt tops that she left and I'm working my way up to finishing those into quilts. One day! This is my largest quilt so far. Not sure I can make one bigger but we'll see.

Dance of the Dragonflies Quilt

Block Magazine, Winter 2014 edition, from the Missouri Star Quilt Co. profiled a strip pieced, half square triangle quilt with an unusual twist. It's called Cutting Corners and as Jenny states, "...its gorgeously simple." The quilt blocks were surprisingly easy to put together. In fact, there are several layouts that one can experiment. I selected four batik and green tonal fabrics which seemed to fit this lap size quilt perfectly. The colors combined to give the quilt a random design. The colors and texture of the fabrics were inspired by the sights and sounds of lazy summer days by a lakeside cabin. I added a piano key border with the leftover strips. Then, I machine quilted an all over design of dragonflies and flowers with blue/green variegated thread on my embroidery machine. Jennie Doan's Cutting Corners would be a great pattern for both the novice and veteran quilter to try because of the design elements, eye catching appearance and versatility. Already thinking of trying this in another color way.

Binding Tool Star Quilt

My daughter loves purple, so she picked out a kit that she liked for me to make. When I finally pulled it out to make it, she decided she didn't like it at all. So it was back to the drawing board. I got out my Block magazines and we started looking through the different quilts. She decided on the Binding Tool Star Quilt. Of course I didn't have enough fabric and the hunt was on for purple batiks. I looked here near home, on-line, and on trips to Wisconsin and Maine. Finally I had what looked like the makings of a purple quilt. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine it would turn out so well (in fact, I was a little skeptical). My daughter, who is an artist, has a good eye for color and had no doubts at all. Did I mention my daughter has Down Syndrome? Well, here is the quilt and we hope you think it's as gorgeous as we think it is.

Piece of Cake!

This quilt is one of two 87" square quilts that will hang together as a room divider. I won't hang it till the second one is quilted, but wanted to post to show you the quilting. It's just all random with a walking foot and Aurifil 50 wt. thread. I did wavy lines at the seams first, then in the middle of each block, then half of that, which anchored it well. Then I just filled in following the wavy lines I'd made... Or not. It's about a half inch apart. I didn't mark any of it! I wanted the quilting heavy for when it's hanging up. IT FEELS WONDERFUL! The back is white premium muslin so the room behind the curtain won't be dark and can have whatever color scheme. Try this! It takes time, but it's so easy and worth it! Oh, and.....another UFO bites the dust in 2016!

Batik Quilt for My Grandaughter

I started to teach my 11 year old grand-daughter to sew. Every time she came over we would sew a little more. She was ready to make a project. We shopped and she picked out the batik jelly roll strips. It was a fun project, but we moved out of state and last year I decided to finish the quilt and make some pillows and surprise her for Christmas. I backed the quilt with "Minky" and put zippers on the back of the pillows. She is now 15 and needless to say she was ecstatic with her quilt.
