    Hawaiian Sunbonnet Sue

    While on a vacation trip, I discovered a gem of a pocket-sized quilt store tucked on a hillside overlooking a quiet area of Honolulu. Every inch of the store had treasures to explore. I purchased a Hawaiian Sunbonnet Applique Quilt Kit, Size 41 x 49 Designed by Donna Fear Originals by HITOMI.com from momwouldgo@hawaii.rr.com The fabrics are authentic Hawaiian floral designs and the kit itself allows you to add your own personal touch. I added a little puppy and kitty to a couple of the blocks. As I worked on sewing and quilting this project, I found myself thankful that the memories of being there with family and friends renewed my spirit. I think that quilting may provide that gift. It now hangs on my sewing room wall to remind me of sunny days, beach time fun, and shopping excursions in beautiful Hawai'i.

    I made this wall hanging quilt a couple of years ago and recently entered it into our local Arts and Crafts show and please to say that Kandy was awarded 2nd prize I thought I could just edit my item on this page but somehow I lost the whole thing. Obviously I'm better at quilting that technology.

    Last fall (2020) I fell in love with making houses..and I also love trees, so it only seemed natural to combine the two when I needed a wallhanging to cover a window on an exterior door. I spent a good portion of my life living in beautiful Oregon, and currently live in Florida. I love the brightly painted houses here, along the Gulf, so of course my houses had to be bright! I love the effect with daylight behind it...looks a bit like stained glass!

We thought the derbies would lighten up the feel of this seasonal wall hanging. By the way, the background is FMQ'd with reckless abandon!

    A few summers ago, I designed a little owl from some pine my son cut out. It was so cute (sorry for the lack of humbleness.) I went through my scraps and came up with this quilted version. The finished hanging is roughly 9" x 12", just the right size for a little October pop. I created the background first, sewing whatever pieces I had on hand together to get the size needed. The owl, branch, and leaf are applied with Wonder Under 805, then stitched around the edges. I then added a couple of borders. Next came the batting. I quilted around all borders, then did some crazy FMQ in the background. The blanket stitch on the borders and binding help give a folk art feel to a contemporary design. FUN!

    I was asked to make a Christmas-themed camper wall hanging. After completing the 18" square quilt, the gal asked for three more, and wanted them all connected into one large hanging. What a task! And I had only 4 weeks to complete it. She was happy, I am happy, and wiser. I'll start my "ask-fors" further in advance from now on. Whew!

I FMQ on my domestic machine, so I had to alter the design and pattern a bit, but the resulting 44"x44" wall hanging is just what my brown living room needed.
